The last state to be annexed into the United States was beautiful Hawaii in 1959. The state is actually a collection of islands formed by volcanoes and continues to grow due to active lava flows. Surrounded completely by water, Hawaii has some of the most scenic and picturesque terrains in the world.
Hawaii is typical of the tropical areas, with summer temperatures in the high 90s and winter temperatures in the 70s. The climate and atmosphere make an excellent vacation spot, but some vacationers love it so much they end up moving to the island state. Many surfers have homes along the beach; because of the tremendous waves the ocean produces. Locals also participate in mountain climbing, horseback riding, riding bikes along volcanoes or just lounging on the beach, admiring the clear night sky.
Hawaii has a growing film industry with the help of movies and television shows like Blue Crush and Lost being shot on the islands. Film companies have been coming to the islands since the 1960s to take advantage of the natural beauty and share it with the world. Ever since 1981, Hawaii has hosted a successful Film Festival who is "dedicated to the advancement of understanding and cultural exchange among the peoples of Asia, the Pacific and North America through the medium of film."
Besides the obvious beauty, one thing that sets Hawaii apart is the fact that it has one unified statewide school system statewide. A board of 14 members oversees the schools, providing guidance when needed. The system must work, because not only is it the oldest school system west of the Mississippi, but Hawaiian students score well above average on standardized tests. Hawaii's collegiate system is comprised of three campuses in Hilo, West O'ahu, and Manoa. Most of the High School graduates complete their schooling here, while a few go out to the mainland and study there.
